Abstract

Papers consist of the typescript of biographical writings concerning John Coffee Hays (1817-1883), who was employed by the Republic of Texas to make surveys on the frontier, became a captain as a Texas Ranger and Indian fighter, and was a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War.

William J. Tucker, soldier, newspaper editor, author, and conservationist, was born in Longview, Texas. In 1929 he became the first Executive Secretary of the Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission. The papers contain letters, literary productions, diaries, military records, and an obituary.
