Papers relate to activities of Henry Raguet while director of the Bank of the United States in Cincinnati, Ohio; as member of the mercantile firm of Logan & Raguet in Nacogdoches; as treasurer of the Nacogdoches Committee of Vigilance and Safety, and as postmaster of Nacogdoches.

Other materials relate to Charles M. Raguet and the Texas Land Agency; the firm of Raguet & Gregg as successors to the Texas Land Agency; business and political papers of James H. Starr, Amory R. Starr, and Robert A. Irion.

Correspondence includes letters from Sam Houston to Anna W. Raguet, (daughter of Henry Raguet), whom he sought to marry, but without success.

Papers relate topically to agriculture, commerce, genealogy, government, military affairs, politics, and social affairs.

Biographical Note

Henry Raguet (1796-1877), merchant, banker, lawyer, and land speculator, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, served in the War of 1812, and later was a businessman in Cincinnati, Ohio, until he visited Texas in 1833 with Sam Houston and John M. Durst.

Raguet moved with his family in 1833 to Nacogdoches, Texas, where he was appointed, December 10, 1835, as treasurer of the Nacogdoches Committee of Vigilance and Safety and later served as postmaster from 1837 to 1852. He moved finally to Marshall, Texas, in 1873.
