Scope and Contents

Comprised of 20th century handwritten copies and transcripts of correspondence, a diary, and memoirs, the Annie L. Middleton Papers, 1839-1845, 1935, document Middleton’s research on 19th century Texas history and government. Correspondence includes letters between Middleton and the Biblioteca Nacional de México1935), as well as the letters of Manuel María de Sandoval, James Hamilton, and Richard Parkenham, relating to the annexation of Texas, the slavery question with respect to British recognition of Texas, and Texas naval affairs (1834-1845). Written by Mexican government officials, diary entries and memoirs concern negotiations for the independence of Texas.

Biographical Note

Raised in Austin, Texas, Annie L. Middleton (d. 1958) received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. A professor of modern languages, Middleton taught at several colleges and universities, including Howard Payne College, Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University), and Baylor University. Middleton also researched and wrote on topics pertaining to Texas history and government, including The Texas Convention of 1845, published in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly (1921).
