Austin American-Statesman Pulitzer Prize nomination scrapbook
Scope and Contents
Newspaper and magazine clippings comprise the Austin American-Statesman Pulitzer Prize Nomination Scrapbooks, 1966-1980, documenting the 1966 sniper shootings on the University of Texas at Austin (UT) campus. Compiled for a Pulitzer Prize nomination, the scrapbooks contain stories published by the Austin American-Statesman on the shooting and its perpetrator, Charles Joseph Whitman, in 1966. Additionally, the scrapbooks include clippings from Life and Time magazines on the shooting, later Austin American-Statesman articles on one of the shooting's victims and the man who nominated the paper, Dewitt C. Reddick, director of the UT School of Journalism, and a large newspaper insert published upon Reddick's death. One scrapbook, which forms part of the Richard T. Fleming University Writings Collection, also contains copies of the nomination form filled out by Reddick in 1967.

Historical Note
Founded in 1871 as the Democratic Statesman, the Austin, Texas, newspaper became the Austin Statesman in 1904 after buying several smaller publications. Owned by the same company since 1924, the Statesman and Austin American combined in 1973 to become the Austin American-Statesman. In 1966, the paper covered the story of University of Texas at Austin (UT) student and former Marine Charles Whitman, who killed 17 people, including himself, and injured 31 others in a shooting that took place largely from a central tower on the university campus. Dewitt C. Reddick, director of the UT School of Communication, nominated the paper's coverage for a Pulitzer Prize.
