Scope and Contents

Ranging in date from 1972 to 1999, the Jim Domke Photographic Archive consists of photographs and print materials by and related to the career of photojournalist Jim Domke. The archive includes 13 boards of mounted photo competition prints; approximately 25 loose photographic prints; an internegative of Domke’s well-known photograph of a Vietnam War prisoner of war’s return home; film negatives from Domke’s stories on Vietnamese refugees, Pope John Paul II’s 1979 visit to the United States, and political coverage of Edward Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Hubert Humphrey and Daniel Flood; and tear sheets from the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Biographical Note

Jim Domke was born in Greeley, Colorado on October 29, 1948. After majoring in photography at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Domke worked as a photographer and photo editor at numerous publications, including the Aspen Times, Newsday, the San Francisco Examiner, Philadelphia Inquirer and Fort Worth Basin Oil and Gas magazine. In addition to his career as a photojournalist, Domke is also known for his creation of the Domke Bag, popular with professional photographers. Domke sold the business to Saunders Photo Resource in 1990. Mr. Domke has won multiple awards for his work, including the California Press Photographers Association Award and the William Randolph Hearst College Photo Award. Mr. Domke currently resides in Arlington, Texas.
