Historical Note

The 410th Bombardment Group entered combat in May 1944 and helped to prepare for the invasion of Normandy by assaulting coastal defenses, airfields, and V-weapon sites in France. It supported the D-Day invasion in June by bombing gun positions and railway choke points. Bill Alexander served in the 410th and took part in D-Day on one of the A-20 Havoc aircraft that bombed the rail yard at Carentan on June 6, 1944.

The Frank Denius Normandy Scholar Program began in the spring of 1990 as a joint project between the University of Texas and The Battle of Normandy Foundation. Its goal is to keep the memories of the Second World War alive by studying its causes, conduct, consequences, and contemporary representations, both in the classroom and in the places where the events took place.
