Scope and Contents

The Alison Owings Papers, 1969-2009, document Owings career as a news writer, and are comprised of correspondence, memorandums, news story ideas, transcripts, newspaper clippings, memorial programs and court documents.

Included is a transcript for the CBS documentary, Vietnam: A War that is Finished, which was hosted by Walter Cronkite, and is accompanied by a certificate representing a 1975 nomination from the Writers Guild of America for Best Documentary, Current Events, Scripts. There is also a schedule for Richard Nixon’s 1969 Presidential Inauguration, and correspondence includes two sketches from Charles Kuralt, as well as letters from CBS news correspondent Hughes Rudd. Memorial programs consist of booklets for news editor John Merriman, journalist Lee C. Townsend, as well as a pamphlet for Cronkite: A Celebration of Life held at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City on September 9, 2009. Court documents focus on race and sex discrimination charges brought against WRC/NBC in the 1970s. Accompanying the final decision issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission are news memorandums, correspondence and clippings regarding the case.

Biographical / Historical

Alison Owings grew up along the East Coast, graduating from American University in Washington D.C. with a degree in journalism. Starting in D.C., Owings was a television news writer for much of her career, and most notably worked at CBS News in New York City alongside several high-profile figures, including Dan Rather, Roger Mudd, Walter Cronkite, Ed Bradley and Charles Kuralt, among others.

After relocating to California Owings authored three oral history books, Frauen: German Women Recall the Third Reich (1995), Hey Waitress! The USA from the Other Side of the Tray (2002), and Indian Voices: Listening to Native Americans (2011).
