Biographical / Historical

Howard Stringer was born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1942. He earned a B.A. degree from Merton College, Oxford University (1961), as well as a M.A. from Oxford. Stringer moved to the United States in 1965 to work at CBS television station WCBS-TV. Shortly after, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving as a military policeman in Saigon for 10 months in the Vietnam War.

Stringer subsequently had a 30-year career at CBS News, serving as executive producer of "CBS Reports" (1976-1981), executive producer of "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" (1981-1984) and executive vice president of CBS News (1984-1986), and then President of CBS, Inc. (1988-1995). Stringer left CBS in 1995 to set up the media and technology company TELE-TV. He joined Sony Corporation of America in 1997 and was later named chairman and CEO of the Sony Corporation Worldwide.

Stringer retired from Sony in 2012 and became head of the board of trustees of the American Film Institute; he now serves as a non-executive director of the BBC.

Stringer became a U.S citizen in 1985; he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1999 for his contributions to media.
