Biographical / Historical

American historian and biographer Samuel Flagg Bemis (1891-1973) taught at Yale University and was president of the American Historical Association. He specialized in American diplomatic history.

Bemis received his Ph.D. from Harvard University (1916) and taught at Colorado College, Whitman College, and George Washington University before taking a position at Yale in 1935.

His books included Jay's Treaty: A Study in Commerce and Diplomacy (1923); A Diplomatic History of the United States (1936); and John Quincy Adams and the Union (1956).
